Ariel Clipper 1600 11 June
From Alex Thompson (Mate)
Now heading West Atlantic and looking out for the next depression that will kick start us North to Greenland. Excellent night in Castlehaven with a few pints of Guinness and a good nights sleep.
Crews now very refreshed and enjoying the best sailing of the trip so far. Sun is shining, wind about 20 kts and the swell slight. Some of the crew have started taking their sights for Ocean Yachtmasters' exam while others are content watching the dolphins and reading books.
Antiope is very close and have been match racing her all day. Now, I'm sure it won;t be long before we will have to let her catch up! Anyway must go as I promised to give Robin a hand making a curry. More tomorrow. Regards to everyone. Alex

Antiope Clipper 0008 12 June
From Mike Harry (Skipper)
Antiope along with Ariel is enjoying the first favourable winds of our trip to Greenland and after the rough conditions of the first 3 1/2 days the crew on board are settling down to the routine of a long passage at sea. Late this afternoon the sea turned a beautiful opaque blue/green as we crossed the Continental Shelf into the deep ocean. Meanwhile back in the galley Irving Rappaport was enticing the crew with his own version of oatcakes made with left over porridge from breakfast!

Ariel Clipper 0800 12 June

Poition at 0800 Lat 52.17n Long 13 50W
Distance to Kap Farvell: 1096 miles
Distance made good Last 24 Hrs: 134 miles
Antiope is half a mile astern but becoming lost in the mist.
A grey drizzly morning after stunning weather yeaterday, but it heralds a front that will give a strong Westerly that will help us along. Crew members all settled into passage routine well.
Three crew members studying astro navigation which is also getting me to sharpen up as they keep asking searching questions. Passages like this are an ideal opportunity to practice astro and many other areas that have a strong professional relevance. All too often most people end up by doing short passages and miss out on many of these skills.
Change of menu last night with spagetti balti as opposed to the chicken balti the night before. Not my choice but I must admit it was rather tasty!
At present having a fry up for braekfast and running the generator to top up the batteries and make water for a massive bathing session later on.

Today's colour is purple …
The Clippers have a three cylinder Perkins/Sabre generator as well as the main engine. In addition to charging the two banks of batteries the generator runs a HP pump for the Seafresh water maker and can also power the emergency bilge pumps. It also heats up the fresh water that is stored in an efficient insulated water tank. Hot showers are therefore possible!
A typical routine would be to run the generator for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. Initially I did not run it at night when people were trying to sleep but in the end changed this routine as people sleep at all hours and the noise of the generator certainly did not stop them!
