NEWS JUST IN (at end)

SARAH VOTED MAN OF THE MATCH IN BREATHTAKING FOOTBALL INTERNATIONAL

Some General Notes of Interest

  1. If you want a quicker entry to the Greenland Home page (rather than going through Clipper Ventures Home Page each time) you can book mark www.clipper-ventures.com/greenland/ Of course if you do this you will not see the Hot News Section so you might like to visit the main home page on an occasional basis
  2. When you send your own Emails around the world, could you please mention the Logs (and the address). Judging by the feedback they appear to be enjoyed and it is heartening to see the numbers of visitors rising all the time. Reciprocal links with www.clipper-ventures.com are always welcome too!
  3. Thanks to Greg Wilkins, who is now in Antiope, you can see the extent of the ice by visiting the NOAA web site below (one line, no spaces):

Basically this shows the ice on the east coast leading down to Kap Farvel where it curls round because of the current. Interestingly to the further north on the south west coast it is all ice free. I would welcome first hand reports!

  5. Clipper Visit to London 17 - 23 July. Please note that Taeping will be visiting St Katherine's Dock (next to Tower Bridge) and will be open for visitors during the weekend 18/19 July and also on Wednesday 22nd. This should be a good time to come and see what a Clipper is like and a good meeting point.

CLIPPER ANTIOPE (cont'd)

From anchorage to harbour's not long,
If you look at a map or a chart,
But the ice in between is so strong,
It's hard to know where we should start.

With skipper Mike or mate Mark at the helm,
And the rest of us manning the fenders,
We crawl through this frozen ice realm,
Looking forward to back-on-land benders.

But behind the score lies a story of arctic courage, determination, stamina and occasional skill. The first half was uneven and did not show the visitors to best advantage but towards the end Thompson hit the post to compensate for the Clipper net absorbing seven hard and skilful hits.

But this was a match of two halves as the nicotine swathed visitors, thoughtfully confused by Mark Hampton's excited and stentorian yell of 'Cooome ooon Scoootland' came out unexpectedly at the beginning of the second half. Weatherall, always threatening, confused the opposition by tripping over his own feet while he slammed the ball into the net narrowly avoided a yellow card for his unfair tackle on himself.

For some time the game see-sawed until the home team, countering fast, caught Wilkins in goal with a blocked site line and slipped in a second half equaliser. Exhaustion was now clearly slowing the home team as the Clippers came forward, usually singly, they were urged on by ex marine Gore's cries of 'Take that man out!' The three remaining goals came as a result of isolated breakthroughs as the visitors confused themselves by remembering the rules and attempting to get their fifth wind.

Had the match gone into extra time the visitors, who had been concentrating their training on penalty shoot outs (as a result of the Argentine match), would have certainly won the day.

It was a close match with the score line honestly reflecting the game.

Crowd violence was verbal and injuries were restricted to grazed knees and elbows. Richard Ellis was accused of seeking sympathy (which he got). Sarah was unanimously elected Man of the Match. Rob 'Iceman' Write was chosen as the best dressed player. Jim Grinyer was the most improved player by the match end, when he finally got a touch of the ball.
