Antiope Clipper GMT 0110 GMT 11 July
At Olafsvik
Position 64.53N 23.45W
From Mike Hampton (Mate)
After a great sail from Greenland we arrived at the fascinating port of Reykjavik. First priority was a quick clean and airing of the boat while we waited for customs clearance. Then off to the hot, naturally heated swimming pools - amazing! Next day saw fresh provisions onboard and we all started on the huge list of 'touristy things". Dinner was provided by Blakes' Paints and was the most fantastic meal ever! Fresh food galore with local specialities such as prawn, lobster and fruits from the amazing greenhouses which are heated from the natural water. Wine and liquors flowed freely, and cigars were thick and plentiful!
Today, Friday saw a split in the boats with Ariel staying in Reykjavik as a base for those wishing to do things in that area, and Antiope moving on to Olafsvik to allow the climbers to attack the Snaefellsjokull volcano. Most are walking up, but I've decided to opt for the snow-mobile option. I am really looking forward to it!
It is 0100hrs local, and the sun is still up. There is no darkness here. We are all looking forward to meeting new crew, and I am sure you are all going to have a great time. The ice is looking thick in the Ammasilik area, so we may have to venture further north where it should be clearer, and possibly go over into the Arctic Circle! Whatever happens its going to be fun!
Regards to all at home and at Olney, Plymouth and those sailing the Channel. Also love to my mum (she's sending me silk thermals so I have got to give her a mention!!).
Mark Hampton.

Comments by Colin de Mowbray
Olafsvik is about 75 miles to the NNW of Reykjavik by gannet but I suspect Antiope's passage will have been more like 125 miles as they would have gone round the long headland marking the northern side of Flaxa Floi (the bay which has Reykjavik in the SE corner). It is noticeable that lots of exclamation marks have crept into the mate's latest report. Obviously the land is affecting him but I dear say the voyage back to Greenland will cure that.
Blakes' Paints are one of our sponsors and are well represented onboard at present. The eight Clipper yachts are coated with Blakes' antifouling paint. We had this also for Clipper 96 and as it proved so successful we have stayed with it.
I am working at joining up all the logs into one document. If you are interested in having a copy please get in touch with me. It will be in Word 97 but I can send it in a different format if you can not read that. Request to me at cdemowbray@clipper-ventures.com
