From Mark Hampton (Mate in Antiope Clipper)

1942 GMT 12 July at Keflivik

Presently we are in Keflivik, 25 miles WSW of Reykjavik, and have just been to a local 'Blue Lagoon' natural health healing spa. Great experience and I recommend it to everyone. Weather is great. 16'C. Overnight sail back from the Volcano was fantastic.

We have received a copy of the web reports which we are enjoying and it brings back good memories of our exciting times.

Sorry if I have caused any trouble about my message about getting some silk long Johns and thermals. I did not appreciate this was a news item for the World Wide Web! It's public now - yes, I'm a bit of a softy!
Regards. Mark.

Keflivik is well known for its military airfield. This has a very important strategic position and is a major US base for staging aircraft and operating their P3 maritime Patrol aircraft. It is the hub of the 'Iceland Faeroes' gap which may not mean a lot to some of you. Very briefly if you look at a map you will notice that any Soviet ships (or German ships in the last war) that are trying to break out into the open waters of the Atlantic have to go round the north of Scotland. They then end up by being funnelled between the Shetlands, Faeroes, Iceland and the Ice to the NW. This is particularly relevant to submarine operations and is why Iceland is such an important member of the NATO Alliance.

Today is a big day as the crew changes are taking place. This also means we will be getting more material back from the returning crew. Please forward material to me or David as these first hand accounts make all the difference to the web reports.

The completed text of the first two legs is almost complete. The last proof reading is underway. Anyone interested in this please contact me and confirm you can take it as a Word 97 document.
