15 July

by Colin de Mowbray

Welcome back to the heroes of Leg TWO! Please let me have written material and photographs for the web as there are lots of people following the voyages and I know your inputs would be welcome.

Welcome also to everyone outside the UK who follows the daily logs. Yesterday we had three visitors from Tonga!

Reports from Sir Robin at Reykjavik before the two sailed said that the weather was sunny with a light Easterly wind. Both boats sailed at 1000 local time on Tuesday and are heading for the Ammassalik region approximately half way up the Eastern coast of Greenland. This is a passage of 410 miles with a base course of 285'T. A rough estimate for this would be in the order of three days but naturally this will depend on the conditions they meet.

The ice diagrams which can be found at:

http://www.natice.noaa.gov/pub/East_Arctic/

Greenland_Sea/Greenland_Sea_South

show that there will be interesting times ahead as the ice barrier on the coast is going to give them plenty to think about. The good news is that the ice is getting less dense and that Sir Robin had the benefit of a full briefing on it from the experts in Reykjavik before they sailed.

Spelling. You may notice variations on the spelling of some of the names in Greenland. These are not typos but sometimes the local name is used, sometimes the name in the atlas and sometimes the name given by RKJ! If you are following on an atlas I am sure you will get the right answer.

15 July 98 From Ariel 0827 GMT

Position at 0900 64.44N 28.07W.

Distance to go to Angmagssalik (Ammassalik) is 230 miles. Reaching with the wind from the north at 10 knots. Antiope is 200 yards astern. Crew settling into the ways onboard a boat so apart from the skipper's sensational Irish stew nothing else to report at present. RKJ

Crew List.

It may be of interest for readers to know who the brave crews of the two Clippers are. Names are published (with their consent). If you require to send a message to any of the crew members you can do this by following the instructions listed on the Clipper Ventures Home page. If you go to the news items and scroll back to 11 June you will find everything there. If you have a problem please contact me or David.
