Antiope 0214 GMT 15 July

From Charlie Osborne (Skipper)

The new crew have all settled in and we are having a sparkling sail, stumping along with beam winds. We saw our first whale blowing off close by. I find it a bit disconcerting taking over the watch at midnight in broad daylight but it's great and I will get used to that very quickly.

Regards Charlie

This is Charlie's first message and the address was wrong which has delayed it. The helpful BT Satmail staff at either Goonhilly or at Highbridge, Burnham, rescued it. The significance of his mistake is that he could not have asked the mate, Mark, about the procedure for sending messages. There will be two reasons for this; either they are not talking to each other or the mate is fast asleep. I put my money on the latter - mates spend all their time asleep!

Thanks for your message Colin and I hope you get this straight away with the new address system. Not a lot to report today. Rather a grey and drizzly day which has a startling resemblance to a summer's day in the English Channel. The highlight has been this evening's supper which I cooked for the crew and they all asked for more! This is a first in my experience and I was not sure how to take it. Hope to see ice tomorrow (Thursday). How much and how thick remains to be seen and is the big question. It will be an interesting few days.

Crew send their regards to everyone. Charlie.

From Sir Robin Knox-Johnston

We have just passed through a band of ice and are now in clear water. To the north west we can see some mountains 2000 metres high which are over 100 miles away. The remarkable visibility is the result of the refraction that this area is noted for and I am glad the crews have had a chance to experience it.

We are now in an bay in the ice heading round an 'Ice Peninisular' and then into another 'ice bay'. Angmassalik looks blocked at the moment so we may have to wait around and explore in this area for a few days. Antiope is keeping nice and close to us and it is good to have her nearby.

Unfortunately it is now mainly overcast but hope it will clear up so we can let the crews land on some of the ice floes. It is a bath day today with lots of hot water. A Knox-Johnston curry tonight. Maybe we've got that the wrong way round. Regards to all RKJ

The two Clipper are about 75 miles off the coast still so they are going to have an interesting period over the next few days.

Totally irrelevant snippet

The following is an extract from an Email from Jason Borthwick, Virgin Direct, on the return of 12 employees from their 6 days of team building with Clipper off the (English) East Coast

……….. The guys are still buzzing from the trip and the log book is growing in size every day. They really did enjoy the trip and all feel it has made a massive difference to them. Thanks to everyone who was involved and the next crew are looking forward to their adventure….

Yes, you've guessed it. The Team Building included a visit to Amsterdam!
