While three of the Clippers remain enjoying the sun at Cowes the two Clippers set off on their attempt to cross the coastal ice barrier and to reach open water …….

From Charlie Osborne (Skipper)
We're back at Ammasalik! This must be a good line for a song. We like it here but would have been happy to have broken out but it was not to be. We made another attempt today in glorious sunny weather with very little wind and clear skies. The local guide was doubtful that we would get out but thought it was worth us having a look. In the end we only got about 8 miles, 2 miles less than on our attempt on Monday. The leads closed in and there was no sign of a passage through the floes so it was back to Ammasalik - again.
We have taken advantage of the good visibility and climbed the 700 metre mountain to look at the situation and we could see no open water. The reported open bay in the ice to the south of Sermilik Fjord (15 miles to the west of Ammasalik Fjord) does not seem to exists from where we are.
The clear weather will mean we will soon get some much clearer ice reports and this will help. The weather at present consists of a series of weak low pressure systems creating a gentle NE air stream which in turn is keeping the ice in place. The thoughts are that it will start to clear and break up when the wind backs to the NW or W but we are not sure when that will be.
Will keep you in the picture as things unfold. In the meantime all are safe and happy

Charlie's report says it all and is backed up by the latest ice report on the internet. These still show a clearer patch to the south but hopefully they will soon get a real-time satellite photograph to give them more exact information. The easiest way to get the report off the net is to enter the Greenland log entry for 17 June and click on the extremely long URL address in the text there.
Although disappointing not to be through the ice they are well placed as the town has full stocks of fuel and food and so they will be in good shape when their chance to get out to sea comes. Patience is one of the major attributes required in this part of the world!
More tomorrow. Colin
