The two Clipper yachts, Antiope and Ariel remain near Ammassalik (65 37N 37 37W) where they are waiting to make a passage through the coastal band of ice. There is not much to report today as they are still hemmed in by this barrier of brash ice. The wind has been blowing up to 30 knots from the NE which has been helping the East Greenland Current bring the ice down the coast. The actual coast line by Ammassalik is in fact east/west as it is like a 50 mile notch in the 1000 mile long East Greenland coast which runs NE/SW.

Regret no break out today. Last night the north westerly wind closed the bay with bergs and we were up until 0430 fending them off. We managed to get away at 0830 and made good progress at first and then met some very thick which stopped our passage to the SW. The wind has now backed further and is from the North East with gusts up to 30 knots. We are returning towards the Ammassalik area and are presently anchored at the head of Whale Bay about 2.5 miles from the last headland just south of the town. We are starting our ice watch again. There is a cruise ship scheduled to arrive at the port in the near future but no sign of her yet. Will update soon.

The delay is frustrating for the crews after all their adventures in this area but patience is one of the greatest virtues required in this type of sailing. It is worth noting that they are both safe and close to civilisation! Sir Robin is looking at the various planning options which he will be addressing as the situation unfolds. Approximate distances (for planning purposes) from their present position, are: To Reykjavik 420 nm, To Scotland (Oban) 1100 nm, to Plymouth (Brassiere Bar in Mayflower Marina) 1500 nm. A realistic days run to plan on in these conditions would be around 150 miles per day.
No feature from the artists today. I suspect they have too busy with their sketch pads - or on ice watch!
