Cordillera de la Sal
We travelled to San Pedro de Atacama - as the name suggests in the Atacama desert. The fantastic rocky outcrops in the foreground owe their shape and colour to the mineral salts of which they are composed (hence the name). Near San Pedro is the Vallee de la Luna, which is composed of all kinds of weirdly shaped rocks where it is de rigeur to sit on an outcrop and watch the setting sun change the desert from red to purple to black. In the background is the magnificent volcano Licancabur which can be seen for hundreds of miles due to the very clear (and thin) air.
